چکیده
-A long circular cylinder with radius R and thickness t transmits a longitudinal eccentrically applied force to a rigid half-space. We study the influence of the eccentricity of the load and the ratio R/t on the stress state of the cylinder using the theory of thin shells in bending. The elastic displacements are presented in the form of a Fourier expansion, the coefficients of which are found by the variational formulation of the problem combined with the penalty approach for a numerical implementation of contact conditions. Results are applied to certain problems of buckling of a circular bar and compared with previous approximate solutions.

Sumlnary--A method is described for finding the normal displacements of the surface of a semi-infinite solid, subjected to arbitrary, transient surface heating. Analytical expressions are derived for the displacements due to instantaneous and continuous point and line heat sources and these can be integrated to produce the solutions to particular problems. The method is illustrated by applicati...
متن کاملAn Almost Optimal Algorithm for Unbounded Searching
Unbounded searching can be viewed as searching an ordered table of infinite size. In this paper we present an algorithm for unbounded searching and derive a lower bound on the number of comparisons required which shows that the algorithm is very nearly optimal. Summ~ry--A method is developed for representing the tangential displacements and tractions at the surface of the semi-infinite solid in terms of potential functions. In this form, a mathematical analogy is revealed between corresponding mixed boundary value problems involving tangential and normal surface displacements respectively. This analogy enables a general solution to be obtained to the ...
متن کاملAlgorithms for a hashed file with variable-length records
Variable-length records are very frequent in database environments. This work gives a set of algorithms for maintaining a new model of static hashed files designed to accommodate variable-length records. Two special techniques for variable-length records are used. First, records are ordered by length and not by key value, e.g., the shortest (longest) records are stored in the main (overflow) bl...
